TERLANO LAGREIN PORPHYR RISERVA DOC ITALY 2016

TERLANO LAGREIN PORPHYR RISERVA DOC ITALY 2016

Three selected sites with vines that are almost a hundred years old and so deliver highly concentrated chewy tannins form the basis of our Lagrein Selection. The wine is fermented and aged in barriques. That gives our Lagrein Porphyry, which owes its name to the bedrock on which the region’s vineyards stand, a complex and intensive nose, although the wine remains compact and distinctive on the palate." - Rudi Kofler
deep impenetrable ruby with violet reflections
This Lagrein selection is a multifaceted wine. It reveals aromas reminiscent of morello cherry and bilberry, with notes of licorice, coffee beans, vanilla, clove and black tea, which makes it spicy and fruity at the same time.
The wine is harmonious on the palate with very compact and concentrated, multilayered flavors combining juicy fruit with spicy, peppery elements and a slightly sweet note of dark chocolate rounded off with silky tannins.
Perfect with pink roasted saddle of venison in a walnut crust with root vegetables and red cabbage, rib of beef braised in Lagrein with mixed polenta and baby vegetables, or braised calf’s cheek with Lagrein sauce on celeriac foam.

93+ Points - Vinous:
"Fully saturated ruby. Lovely lift to the multifaceted aromas of raspberry, coffee, underbrush, liquid rocks and wild mint. Sweet and silky on entry, then rich and deep but also oak-dominated in the middle, with pure red berry intensity slightly camouflaged by herbal, sweet spice and soil notes. This expands and grows on the long back half, but needs to spend a couple more years in the cellar to approach optimal drinkability." Ian D'Agata - (Feb 2020)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2016 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Porphyr pours from the bottle with deep and dark intensity. Raw cherry and blackberry notes pop out from the big, ripe and dark fruit. There's good dimension to this Lagrein, with lots of inky black fruit and nuance. It's a bit raw. I'm being generous with my drinking window here, and it's probably better to just enjoy this now with a pot roast. The wine ages in barrique for 18 months, with one-third new oak. Some 22,000 bottles were produced." - Monica Larner (11th Jul 2019)
